School holidays are here, do variable speed limits still apply in NZ? 

<p>If you've ever slowed right down outside a school out of habit, only to realise it's the middle of the holidays and there's not a kid in sight, you're not alone. New Zealand's school speed zones work a little differently to what a lot of drivers assume and it's worth knowing exactly how they operate so you're not caught guessing.&nbsp;</p><h2>Do variable speed limits apply during the holidays?&nbsp;</h2><p>No. Variable speed limits outside schools don't operate during school holidays. They're built around the actual comings and goings of a school day, so once term ends, the lower limit stops applying and the road reverts to its normal posted speed.&nbsp;</p><h2>How the system actually works&nbsp;</h2><p>Under the national Setting of Speed Limits Rule, local streets outside schools in urban areas need a 30km/h variable speed limit within 150 metres of school entrances, while rural schools with higher surrounding speed limits need variable limits of 60km/h or less within 300 metres. These reduced limits only apply within 45 minutes either side of the school bell at the start and end of the school day, and the nationwide rollout to eligible schools was completed by 1 July 2026. <a href="https://www.speedcameras.co.nz/blog/nz-speed-limits-complete-guide" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"><u>NZ Speed Camera MapNZ Speed Camera Map</u></a>&nbsp;<br><br>Outside of term, or outside of those bell-time windows, the limit doesn't apply, the road simply runs at its usual speed.&nbsp;</p><h2>How to tell if a zone is active&nbsp;</h2><p>Look for the electronic signs. When the speed number is showing and the yellow lights are flashing, that displayed speed is the legal limit until the zone ends. When the signs are blank or the lights are off, the normal posted limit is what applies. </table></div><h2>Important Exception: Passing School Buses&nbsp;</h2><p>Regardless of the posted electronic variable signs, New Zealand law strictly dictates that the legal speed limit is 20 km/h when passing a stationary school bus that has stopped to drop off or pick up children. This 20 km/h limit applies to traffic travelling in both directions&nbsp;</p><h2>Still worth easing off&nbsp;</h2><p>Even with the signs off, a lot of schools run holiday programs, sports camps or events on-site during the break, so there can still be kids around school gates when you're not expecting it. And it's a handy reminder either way: the 20km/h limit when passing a stopped school bus applies year-round, holidays included, in both directions.&nbsp;<br><br>Slowing down for a school zone is second nature for most of us, but not every close call on the road is something you can plan for.
