When the signs are blank or the lights are off, the normal posted limit is what applies. But driving without a current WoF isn't just a paperwork slip-up, it's illegal.&nbsp; It can leave you out of pocket and if you're ever in an accident, it could affect whether you're covered at all.&nbsp;<br><br>Here's everything you need to know about getting, renewing, and understanding your WoF&nbsp;and what it means if you're relying on someone else's insurance after an accident.&nbsp;</p><h2>What is a Warrant of Fitness?&nbsp;</h2><p>A Warrant of Fitness (WoF) is a check confirming your vehicle met New Zealand's safety standards on the day it was inspected. It's run by <a href="https://www.nzta.govt.nz/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">NZTA Waka Kotahi</a> and applies to light vehicles,&nbsp;cars, vans, motorcycles and campervans under 3,500kg.&nbsp;<br><br>A WoF label doesn't mean your car is safe right now, only that it was safe when it was tested. Aim to get it checked a week or so before your current one expires, so you've got time to fix anything that fails.&nbsp;<br><br>Larger suppliers like <a href="https://vtnz.co.nz/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">VTNZ</a> will do a WoF while you wait, but at busy times that can mean over an hour's wait. Booking in with a mechanic usually gets you a specific time slot instead.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>If your car fails, you can only drive it to get repaired or re-inspected, and only if it's safe to do so. This applies whether it's failed the inspection itself or you're driving to fix a fault that's come up since. Once it passes the mechanic will provide you with a new WoF label, the label goes on the inside of your windscreen, driver's side. &nbsp;</p><h2>What Happens If You Drive Without a Current WoF&nbsp;</h2><p>It's illegal to drive&nbsp;or even park on the road&nbsp;with an expired WoF.
